The Internet Society on Egypt’s Internet shutdown

Normally I would avoid anything that comes anywhere near being political since this is a business website.  However I feel this is imoprtant and would hope that the majority of the world agrees that goverments repressing speech is wrong.

The Internet Society on Egypt’s Internet shutdown

On behalf of:

Lynn St. Amour – President and CEO, and the Internet Society Board of Trustees:

“We are following the current events in Egypt with concern as it appears that all incoming and outgoing Internet traffic has been disrupted. The Internet Society believes that the Internet is a global medium that fundamentally supports opportunity, empowerment, knowledge, growth, and freedom and that these values should never be taken away from individuals.

The Internet Society considers this recent action by the Egyptian government to block Internet traffic to be an inappropriate response to a political crisis. It is a very serious decision for a government to block all Internet access in its country, and a serious intrusion into its citizens’ basic rights to communicate.  If the blockage continues, it will have a very detrimental impact on Egypt’s economy and society. Ultimately, the Egyptian people and nation are the ones that will suffer, while the rest of the world will be worse off with the loss of Egyptian voices on the net.

However we are most concerned about the safety and security of the Egyptian people.  Alongside the rest of the world, we share the hope for a positive and lasting solution to the problems that have risen to the surface there.

In the longer term, we are sure that the world will learn a lesson from this very unfortunate example, and come to understand that cutting off a nation’s access to the Internet only serves to fuel dissent and does not address the underlying causes of dissatisfaction.”

Google Finds Sucsess With Bounty Program

Google takes security seriusly.  So seriously in fact that Google pays out thosands of dollars in rewards to hackers every year.  Any hacker who can find a security exploit in a gogle producat and reports it to Goole is handsomely rewarded fo their efforts.  Last thursday Google patched 13 holes that were discovered in the Chriome browser.   The hacker who found these exploits and reported them to Google was given $3,133 in bounty.  Hopefully this is a sign that Google will repeat it steallar performance and this years hacker conventions.  Last Chrome was the only browser hackers where not able to exploit.  Browser exploits are the number on way viruses. malware, spyware, and trojans are spread.

Steve Jobs Takes Meical Leave Again…

The following was e-mailed to all Apple employees this morning:

Team,

At my request, the board of directors has granted me a medical leave of absence so I can focus on my health. I will continue as CEO and be involved in major strategic decisions for the company.

I have asked Tim Cook to be responsible for all of Apple’s day to day operations. I have great confidence that Tim and the rest of the executive management team will do a terrific job executing the exciting plans we have in place for 2011.

I love Apple so much and hope to be back as soon as I can. In the meantime, my family and I would deeply appreciate respect for our privacy.

Windows 7 Service Pack 1 Imminent

The final tweaks are being made to SP1 for Windows 7.  Most users will never notice the changes as no new features are being added to Windows 7 with this service.  It will however take care of compatibility issues with Server 2008 and provide several bug fixes.   As with all updates users should install it when available and if users have any issue they should not hesitate to make an appointment.
